Nothing is as rewarding as finishing a DIY project successfully. What's your secret to accomplishing that?
What is one of the biggest things that has kept you from getting caught up in your next DIY project? For me, there have been numerous reasons ranging from not having the supplies, space, and time to watching a series on Netflix. All these above-mentioned excuses have caused dust to settle on unfinished projects as well as dreams for future projects. If you do this I really do not hold it against you because these are some of my biggest excuses that are keeping me from doing things I actually enjoy.
In this blog today I would like to share with you some of the biggest challenges that I have faced, some tricks that I have learned, as well as why we still do this.
For this blog, I won't be giving a cappuccino rating, but you can always just make yourself a cup to drink while you snuggle up comfortably on your couch and give a couple of seconds of attention to my 2 cents.
Challenges
Time
We are all blessed with 24 hours every day but somehow we always find it lacking. Chasing the shadows as the sun rises and sets with each passing day. This has been one of the biggest struggles for me; finding the time to do a DIY project. The one thing that I have learned though is that you won't find the time. There will never be enough time unless you make time. Schedule time into your day to work on a project and stick to it.
Supplies
Supplies aren't cheap but somehow you always end up having 20 of the one thing but nothing of what you need. My method to avoid it is to keep my supplies clean and organized; to have a designated space where I keep them. That way it is easy for me to check what I have and what I need. Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to supplies is that the majority of the time you will be able to find alternative methods or products to complete some of your projects if you do not currently have the finances. Keep your memory fresh about what you have and your eyes peeled for sales in store. You might be able to save a buck or two like that.
Planning
Planning is not always fun and drives me insane the majority of the time but it is of vital importance to remember it when creating a project. It is when you don't plan ahead that mistakes are made and supplies are wasted. Of course, there will be small mistakes as you learn a new skill but neglecting planning can cause you damage. One of my biggest failures was probably when I painted an accent wall in my house and never put down any tarps. The carpets were never the same afterwards. Plan and prepare your space well.
Space
One of the biggest challenges I have found is not having a designated craft space. If you are able to have one of those, you are so lucky. It has kept me from starting up projects or completing some on multiple occasions. After a while, I realized that you do not need the perfect DIY room to be able to create something you love. I then went out of my way to see if I could multipurpose the space I had been blessed with.
Tips and tricks
Working environment.
Having a clean, tidy, and neat environment is important when you want to successfully complete a DIY project without hiccups. Ensure that you complete all the necessary prep before starting your projects.
Know what you want
Know what you want your end product to look like and what you want to accomplish in the time you have put aside. Work with that but also be okay with the possibility of things not going as planned.
Have fun
The most important tip from my side is for you to have fun. Enjoy it. Get submerged and lost in creativity and passion and allow yourself to create something beautiful.
